Mortegard Bestiary and Competition

The world of Mortegard is rich, and steeped with lore. Part of our ever expanding world is expressed through the lorebook. Recently we have made a large addition to the bestiary, with a lot of new animals introduced.

Alongside this addition has come a new competition in our Discord called ‘Droc’sid’s World Tour’. In this contest, players face 10 riddles, each with an answer to be drawn from the lorebook.

Each correct answer will have Droc’sid, our beloved bot, send you a puzzle piece. Each of these puzzle pieces can be arranged to decipher the final riddle, with the answer to go into a form.

With the final answer correct, entrants will earn themselves a limited mint ‘Mortegard Menagerie’ development as well as a cabin to place it on.

Here are some of our favorite picks from the lorebook from the recently added creatures:

Kul’nat

Kul’nats originated from the Sha’haiyan wastes but following the immense ruin after The Great War, took full advantage of the food available to them and quickly spread across all of Mortegard. They live in communal nests where they play different roles, with the express purpose of drying carrion meat to store for hard times.

Once their stores are full they build strange humanoid effigies as sacrificial offerings to would-be predators. The presence of these hanging from trees by grass nooses has lead the the belief of evil presences being present in many wooded areas, while educated travelers see them as opportunities for free meals, and to leave the local Kul’nats in peace.

Cragwale

Cragwales are enormous, ominous creatures that live in shallow mounds beneath the crust of Mortegard. Despite the fact they are largely stationary(moving no more than 10 digits at most each year) not much is known about their origins or nature.

A demon known as Arnak’urr Tel’drak paid an immense amount to research these creatures, but after losing his sanity, the tunnel he was digging to get to the underside mysteriously collapsed without warning, killing him and many of his researchers.

Batwing Butterfly

Originally created as a display of wealth, once alchemists perfected the art of synthesising these animals, they became a little more than extravagant amusement. Created by the alchemical synthesis of bat and grey emperor butterfly genetics, these creatures, like all synthesized animals, are incapable of breeding and lack survival instincts.

They must be fed with sweetened blood though specialized feeders, for which there is a secondary market(usually the alchemists that sold the butterflies in the first place). Once the novelty has passed, children often release these creatures, where they promptly fly off and die within a day or two.

Mortegard is an on-chain player-driven fantasy world, offering both Kingdoms and Expeditions gameplay. Live now on Polygon, the blockchain game involves players participating in an on-chain economy, building and managing their kingdoms, or sending their entourage on dangerous missions to collect items. Mortegard’s story unfolds through regular live roleplay events, heavily influenced by player interaction, and the player-controlled economy consists of five core tokenized resources produced by rulers developing their in-game land. The Mortegard Dev team set out to make a deep, lore-rich, macro-scale fantasy world with players’ experience and participation at the forefront of the design process, and we have much more on the way.
